What is trauma?

Trauma can be defined as anything that drastically exceeds the flexibility of the mind. Trauma results when one experience excessive stress that overwhelms their emotional or physical ability to cope.

What are the emotional, mental and physical impacts of trauma?

Traumatic experiences can produce emotional, cognitive, and physical repercussions. 

Emotional Impact

Emotionally traumatized individuals can become anxious, depressed, fearful, and withdrawn. They can have recurring panic attacks. 

Mental impact

When one experienced trauma, they will likely also experience concentration problems. They could have problems remembering things, and feel distracted much of the time. In extreme cases, some people experience flashbacks of the event, nightmares, amnesia, and intense feelings of guilt.

Physical Impact

Physically, many people have eating and sleeping problems. They are regularly exhausted and they tend to develop chronic pain depending on the nature and duration of the injury sustained.

What is long term trauma and PTSD?

Long term trauma is the result of a prolonged horrific experience such as a car accident or an individual held captive or one who is repeatedly abused. Many people develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) frequently as a result of long-term trauma.

What are the symptoms of PTSD?

PTSD symptoms include:

  • Fear of driving

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Flashbacks, nightmares, and bad dreams about the incident

  • Panic and anxiety attacks

  • Memory and concentration difficulties

  • Depression or extreme sadness

  • Irritability and outburst of anger

  • Appetite changes
